How can I best use

The Help Desks are designed around topic headings that we hope will allow you to find the subject that you are interested in.

There are three menu levels:

  • Help Desk Portalgives access to main help desk topics on- Personal & Family/Business/Brexit and general information on legal fees etc
  • Help Desks: these are main menus for the Help Desks and list all topics covered. Menus are updated when new topic are added.
  • Individual topics: these are the topics covered in the three main Help Desks and are regularly updated when new information is available.
What sort of help can you give me?

You will find lots of help about the UK's laws & regulations and related information on a wide range of topics from our Help Desks:

Personal & Family: This covers topics that can affect you in your daily life, ranging from buying or renting a home, to making your Will through to employment issues and your rights over your personal  information and your identity. If the particular topic you are interested in is not included, please tell us and we will see what we can do to include it.

Business: This is designed to address topics of interest to business owners and managers. It is also aimed at helping entrepreneurs who are starting up a business and trying to run one with limited time and money to spend.

Brexit: This is the most challenging single legal issue facing the UK. It is important to have accessible information on what it means to everyone in the UK, British citizen or not, as it affects all sorts of rights both in personal and business terms.

Why is better than just Googling?

Easy to answer: a Google search will return literally hundreds of websites, making it very difficult to select those of genuine help.

Many sites will be out of date, even by a few weeks, and others will offer confusing or conflicting guidance on the same topic.

This is both disturbing and confusing for the vast majority of users and, possibly worse, it could result in users misunderstanding their position. Atkins-Shield has taken care of these issues by carefully curating its linked sites to ensure that they are as redundant-proof as possible.

We have searched for and edited out the irrelevant or less useful sites, then created links to relevant & reliable websites and to specific pages within those sites that give up-to-date answers, so saving your members both time, money and concern in doing their own research.

Our website significantly and measurably accelerates your members' ability to reach the answers they are after.

Do I have to pay?

The good news is that we offer the service to you free of charge.

Is Atkins-Shield a law firm?

No, neither Atkins-Shield Limited nor it's website, is a law firm and neither gives legal advice.

Is your information up to date?

We take care to link you to sites that are regularly updated to avoid letting you see information that is out of date. This avoids us in the very time-consuming job of continually monitoring changes to law and policy.

We cannot claim to be completely redundant proof because we don't control third party sites, but we have tried to make sure that you are getting guidance that is current and accurate.

If you think we have missed something or that there are errors we urge that you get in touch so we can make corrections- Feedback Form.

Will you charge lawyers for introductions?

We do not currently have a relationship with any lawyers under which we charge a referral fee. As and when we do provide a lawyer referral service, it will be on the basis that it does not increase the cost of legal fees to our users.

How do you make your money?

We will get our income from third party legal document suppliers with which we have links and from lawyers and law firms who agree to contribute articles and guides to the website.

We will also receive income from sponsorsand from clients to whom we provide services, such as trade & professional associations.

How and from where do you get your information?

We look exclusively to the web for our primary sources of information. One of Atkins Shield's core purposes is to use existing technology to offer improved and efficient access to laws and regulations that affect your every-day life

The links and other information that are offered on our website are curated from websites considered to be reliable with up-to-date information. This is because we want to be as sure as we can be that, when you research your topics via our site, you are reading or watching current information.

What websites am I linked to?

All Atkins-Shield's links are to websites created and published by third parties who are believed to be reliable information providers. Many of the sites are provided by Government and government departments and by regulatory bodies.

We select the websites on the basis that they are the type that will be continuously updated so that, when you access them via this website, they will provide current information. However, we cannot guarantee that this happens in all cases, so please be aware of this when you are browsing.

Is a Government agency?

Given the number of our links to Government related websites, this is perhaps an understandable question.

No, we are an independent organisation that has been privately funded and established.

How can I save on legal fees using

It is well known, and in terms of lawyers also quite true, that "time is money".

There are a number of ways you help yourself save on legal fees by using Atkins-Shield:

  1. By browsing our Help Desks you are straight  away saving on paying a lawyer to do the same job- to tell you what the law actually says;
  2. The more research you do via the links we provide and via the connected links that they provide, the greater understanding you gain without engaging a lawyer;
  3. Using our Legal Fees Savings Calculator you can assess how much in fees you have saved just by using our free-to-use website.
Most websites have terms of use and a privacy policy- what are yours?

These are important for you to know about and they published on the site, appearing on the main menu and can be found via this link.

If I don't find what I am looking for?

First of all, we are sorry that you can't find an answer via our website.

Second, please tell us via our Feedback Form what you want to find out and we will do our best to research it and place relevant information on our sites for you and other users.

Development: has been created by experienced practising lawyers. Its founder is UK trained and qualified solicitor, Jeremy J. Cama, who strongly advocates better access to law for all and clients’ rights to excellent legal services at a fair price. is owned, published and licensed by Atkins-Shield Limited.

1.  Access to law:’s core purpose is to help individuals and businesses with ready access to legal topics both before and during legal advice. Lawyers provide a vital service on very many fronts. But they are not (apart from legal aid) publicly funded and obtaining advice can be stressful, time consuming and expensive. The Legal Profession has rightly come under increased scrutiny on its practises and been found wanting in a number areas. We highlight these in our Reports

1. Cost: While access is a key issue that addresses, it is also helps reduce the cost of being informed on legal topics. Being informed and spending time on research has a direct and material impact on whether or not legal advice is needed and, if it is, also on the cost and efficiency of obtaining that advice.

The Competition and Markets Authority noted in its 2016 Report on the Legal Services Market that so-called ‘intermediaries’:

“As an information source, can diagnose the consumer’s legal issue and direct them to an appropriate provider.” and “can play an important role in..determining the best course of action before approaching a provider.”

Our unique website is targeted at significantly improving access to, and helping our users reduce (if not eliminating) the cost of getting help with legal matters.

Financial: is a free service to the public and businesses. Our income will come primarily from commercial sponsors, subscribers and third party document providers.
